I think a few people have already said the same as me here. I'm a guy and I pretty much always role female chars.

I usually prefer the models, animations etc and yes, if I'm looking at the back of a toon for hours why not be a sexy lady rather than some steroid addled dude :)

I am a girl and it depends really. I generally play females because males tend to have god awful models, or at least overly bulky models (Thinking wow here). But if they have sexy models, I'll play a male, because I enjoy looking at him more than some girl in her undies lol. Like Tera Online I played a high elf male priest because they were pretty cute, ( http://swtoryuki.files.wordpress.com/2012/03/high-elf-male.png ).

In wild star so far, I don't think I would play a male, just because the style doesn't appeal to me. But I will have to see in game what options they have etc, and what I think at the time...

I'm a female and I almost only play Female characters. When I try to play a male, I grew tired of it very fast.

I only enjoyed a male character in SWTOR, because it was very fun to play a Smuggler male looking like a Seventies black - disco gangster flirting wil all females he met. And in WOW I played a little bit a Panda male, because they were amazingly fun! Especially when falling asleep.

I'm not interested to play sexy male characters. It doesn't amuse me at all. I prefer my male toons to be humoristic and fun.

I'm female and I only play female characters, I guess because I'm of the "character is an extension of ME" camp of players. It's an alternate version of me in another world.

Oh wait, there was one exception. I tried Tera for a bit and I did make a male character once for it because I got so sick of watching my female characters just stand there jiggling and undulating all the time. Of course I didn't play Tera for very long anyway.

I'm a male, and I only play male characters. I don't think playing with female chars are cool for me. Y'know, the over-sensuality of female characters just doesn't appeal me.

I played TERA, and I didn't like female models. Even warriors had silk-like armor, that doesn't match reality. Who in their right mind would go into the wilderness wearing nothing more than a dress?

Pretty much this. I enjoy playing female characters, just.......ugh...the amount of porn-baiting that goes on (even in cartoony games like Wildstar) is annoying/insulting (which means I'll be staying away from female draken, and granok)

If I can find female characters that work though, it's usually a 50/50 thing then.

I'm male and play male characters. Feels more natural and I do think it's disingenuous to play a female for things like free help. I see the character as sort of MY brainchild, and therefore an extension of myself in a way, so the sexualization of my own character doesn't make sense.

Also, something about being a man controlling a female character feels weird to me. Like I'm some kinda dirty perv or something (Yes, I'm judging you all).

I'm a dude and I play both. I generally don't view the characters as an extension of myself. I merely view them as characters in the game. If I am participating in more social aspects of the game, I usually main a male character. I probably would say I play 25% male characters and 75% female characters nowadays. I like cool looking characters, but I do also like a hint of sleekness to the female characters. Skimpy has its place in MMOs, but not when it's overboard. For example, I think some of the designs in Tera are clever, but the overall theme was way too skimpy for my taste. I shall demonstrate my preferences by providing image links of my last MMO characters. :p

Male playing Male here. My character is what I would be like in the game world. I can't fathom how to be a female. I think and act like a male, so do so in my gaming as well. I don't need to stare at a cartoon female body all day. My character is an extension of me.

It is also annoying to see so many female characters getting free stuff and help all the time as if all the male players think they are talking to a real female and have any shot at meeting the female character.

Both sides of that equation do; those lying and those being blissfully ignorant.

My main toon is usually male (so it's the same as my real gender). It varies with alts who for most part are healers and thus it feels like female matches that better (is that sexist? :/)

Many people get given stuff without even being asked their gender. Happened to me a few times. I just accepted the charity like any rational person would and went my own way.

Well, females are often more caring, I don't think that's particularly sexist. But it would for example be sexist to say that you play a female healer because you believe that males are much worse at healing.

I will play a male character and I am a male. I like to identify with my character and I can't do it with female characters.

It depends on who you ask, really. I've seen some outright ridiculous accusations of so-called sexism and racism and knowing those accusers, preferring healer characters to be female, even for oneself is sexism in their minds. Even your quoted argument above would be seen as sexist.

That said, sexist or not, there's nothing wrong with it until you start to pigeonhole people based on such characteristics.

I default to male, but for me it's always an aesthetic choice, rather than an "extension of me" one. For example, if I were still playing WoW, I'd probably be playing either male Horde characters or female Alliance characters, because most of the male Alliance models are godawful (when not completely encased in armor) and the Horde ones tend to be pretty cool.

Honestly though, the "it's an extension of me, so I choose the gender I am IRL" thing, at least in games like this, strikes me as a little strange at times. (Not judging, not saying it's bad, just saying it doesn't click with me.) Many of us will be running around as zombies or robots or weird little furry things, who command telekinetic powers or hyper-advanced technology or guns that shoot magic. Seems to me like any of those things would conceptually distance your character from your real self a lot more than just being the opposite gender would.

I usually play females but i never use it to get stuff.

I did it once to get a really expensive thing cheaper, and i felt really really bad after it, like throwing up bad.

I played a male in DaoC for many years. That char became "me" somehow. I never play alts either.
I think the longer you have played the same char the more it becomes "you"

Man playing a male. And I must say...if you are using the "I want to stare at ass" reason for playing female, then congratulations! You are enforcing the creepy boy gamer stereotype! Way too many instances of this reason in this thread.

For most MMOs I have played female characters such as, WoW, SWTOR, AION, TERA etc. But Guild Wars 2, my main is a Male Charr Warrior :) (I'm a guy) I'm not a bit interested in DAT ASS! or anything like that, they just look better than the male characters but hey to each their own.

I'm a dude and in most games I prefer to play non-human species(unless the humans look better in some cases), and in my opinion most of the time the female versions of those species will look 100 times better than the male versions so I usually end up playing female characters. I love the style of this game though so it'll be tough but my main will most likely be a female aurin :D
