Every mmo I look for a Lizardman race.. I dunno why.. but seeing a lizardman with a shield and a weapon and his S-s-s-sexy voice would just make me happy. The races in WildStar so far are pretty good. They are not TOO cookie cutter. I hope the final 2 races are more on the unique end of things. I know we seem to need bipedal species but I hope we can get away from that someday. I mean how cool would a 4 legged Insect race be? Or a 6 legged half spider half biped? We are in outer space and their are bound to be some crazy species. I know this creates a ton of work for the developers and modeler's and texture artists and Fur/Hair specialists but how much enjoyment you would get from the community for bringing some seriously different types of species into a MMO would be well worth the effort *I would hope*.

Having said that I will reiterate the the current races look pretty good. So far I like what Carbine has done.

I'm not really a fan of the art as I tend to like the art say from Tera a lot more but I do feel using a less CPU intensive look helps the game out in many ways. It worked for wow for sure.

    Cheers

I agree that it would be interesting to see some non bipedal species in MMOs but you hit the nail on the head as to why this has not happened yet. Cost. More specifically MMOs can make a lot of armor because those art assets get a lot of use. They are pretty cost effective to make when each shoulder piece, chest piece, set of pants, etc... can be used across all of the character races. While having a dryder race in an MMO would be awesome I can imagine that making spider pants in addition to all the normal pants you have to make being super costly.

I was a little hopeful that we would have gotten playable Naga in WoW, even if all the pant and boot models ended up looking like some kind of armored sleeping bag.

Well that's the thing. Don't constrain yourself to the typical thought process. The dryder would not really have leg armor in the traditional sense. The texture of his legs would change perhaps give him some layered platelettes.. meaning some layers scaled type armor.. just be creative. I'm a very creative person (web developer, musician, dabbled in 2d/3d content creation, textures, modeling) so I know a lot various ways I would approach some of my concepts. I'd just like to see a bit more creative out-of-the box thinking when it comes to races and classes. Give the MMO community a really different look. It would be costly. NCSoft has the money I believe :)

I think it's more of a cost vs. value thing. How many people would play such races? Would they bring in more money? So many players already stick to humans in their MMOs, and it would be sad and rather wasteful to put all that work into a race that a fraction of the community might play.

That being said, I think it could work more easily in less gear-centric MMOs for sure. And it would be interesting to see regardless.

You bring up a very valid point. People do tend to stick with humans a lot. I think a lot of that is because they are modeled a bit better.. the armor tends to look best on them. Still want my lizard man :)

As someone who has boxes full of tiny plastic lizard men for wargaming, I can understand that.

As in the Lizardmen for Warhammer? That was my army when I played that long ago. Too bad Warhammer Online didn't implement all of the tabletop game's races and maybe even do 3 factions. I sure do like playing a lizard race.

Personally, a reptilian race would be cool. EQ2 had the Iksar and Sarnak races, both very cool. And iksar just had that kind of voice acting the OP mentioned: "Are you going to buy anything or just wasssssting my time? This isnt a museum display, you know" - man I loved freeport.
Sarnak also had a bit of a different stance, more akin to the Draken race in wildstar, and unique helmet models because of their very different heads.

Something even more non-human would be cool, but like someone said, the cost for that would go way up, since they would need all their equipment assets completely reworked from the ground up, and special mounts etc. So likely we will just see bipedals, albeit we have two more chances for some nice and creative ones.

eeeeehn... I'm not sure about a reptilian race right off the bat. If only because if they're too humanoid, we're all but ripping off sword of the stars (the only game with humanoid reptilians I think would be played by a large portion of the populace), and if they're not humanoid enough, people will tend to avoid them entirely, since reptiles set off all kinds of "do not want" signals in people's brains (next time you find a tiny lizard crawling on you unexpectedly, or step right next to a hissing snake, tell me how you react :p)

edit: That said, it'd probably be really cool if they found a new way to spin the whole 'we don't think like mammals' deal most reptile races have going for them while not making them pure logic/emotionless beings like the Iskar and the WHF Lizardmen sortofkinda are.

I don't think I'm ripping off anyone especially since I've never heard of Sword of the Stars. Keep in mind all creative and artistic endeavor's are linked to inspiration from what has come previously. When I write a new song on my guitar which I'm working on one right now.. you can bet it was influenced by the music I've listened to for years. As for people's "phobia" with lizards lmao.. well that is just their own issue.

I'm sure there are enough people that would actually play a reptilian race. At least as many that played those horribly looking Troll's from wow... or the reptilian class from Skyrim.

MMO's need to open it up a little and not think of the "masses" at all times.

I agree and disagree I'm afraid.

MMOs are the riskiest of ventures any company can take. They either make or break a company that tries them, if you're very lucky you break even. If you're not so lucky? Well your investors will likely tear into your company and dissolve it.

Sad but true fact. Games are here to make money. They have to at least break even or it can wreck a company's future from the debt pulled down from the failed venture.

Is there more room for experimentation? Certainly.

Is there room for reptile people as a playable race right off the bat? Ehhhhn... less likely. It's obvious that they're trying to keep the races, for the most part, very humanoid, and even went as far as to stick humans in both factions to give them both a "Safe Choice" for completely new players. It's part of the reason I'm so skeptical of the Chua being the next dominion faction.

That said. It'd be pretty cool if they did. But I doubt they will until some sort of expansion.

I Agree with most of what you said here Shadow. I do feel MMO's that are successful sometimes sit back and just enjoy the sunshine. So hopefully WildStar will be tremendously successful and then.. when the money is rolling in, in buckets and barrels.. they can take risks. Add some new controversial race or even class. I just get tired of the same old stuff. I want to see more creativity.

At least with Wildstar they have an entire galaxy to work with. It gives them an excuse, lorewise, to create any race that's as far from human as they want. So if things end up as a strong success, they could add new races in the future. Even if it is a few years down the road. Unfortunately, a new race like that would have to be something immensely popular to justify spending the time and money on creating it. So they would either have to give it some special attribute which runs the danger of being so good people only play that race or make it a paid for expansion like from a cash shop.
