Gotta have that female mechari hooker nurse character as a medic. Too many lulz to be had to just ignore this potential.

First off always believed that the "Medic" was going to have melee weapon and "Engineers" were going to have a Rifle since I heard those names being thrown around. Though I figured it was going to be more of a power gauntlet then shock paddles (well played Carbine, well played...). Why? Simply because beating the health in and out of players was more awesome sounding to my earholes then waving a mystic piece of wood around (RIP Staff lovers). Wildstar is supposed to have wacky humor in it so stop looking at everything from a deep logical viewpoint. Pounding someone to death with a shock paddles or high tech boxing gloves sounds pretty realistic to me with that in mind. As for why there are medieval styled weaponry in the future I point to Light-Sabre logic and the rule of cool. If it looks awesome, sounds awesome and tastes acceptable, then who cares if it makes sense?

Don't really care if this was already covered I'm late to the party. No one gave me my invite.

Pretty sure lightsabers taste like burnt tongue, but that's what I'd expect.

Biggest beef I have isn't so much the weapons and more of the fact that we're addressing it by a name that it probably won't have when the class comes out. "Medic" implies that all it can do is heal and can't do any sort of dps, so something like "alchemist" or something as neutral would make for a more adequate class name that devs will stick with.

On the other hand though, if devs do for some silly reason stick with "medic" for the class name, I demand nurse hats and stethoscope accessories for anyone playing it.

Medic does somewhat imply a pacifist-healing role, but they could be evil medics and spread disease and pestilence with their medical training.. or heal people wrong, as a joke. Amputations do cause a lot of damage. If a medic can get in close to an enemy, they could wreck havoc with surgical precision™.

I'm oddly now partial to the name "Medic" as an mmo class, just because it's more-or-less unique to the genre. Beyond pacifism, the title also implies a use of technology, a step away from the classic fantasy roles. It would be awesome if there was a Medic-only armor set that came with a reinforced shield attachment like StarCraft medics have.

That's true, there are evil medics, but usually they're just called "dental hygienists".

If out of some bizarre turn of events I end up maining a medic, I'll be ROFLMFAO.

The medic is growing on me, but it would have to be an aurin and maybe a mordesh if I'm going to play one.

I have a different take on the term "medic". A person with a medical background would have intimate knowledge on how to inflict pain just as much as they would how to heal wounds. Medical knowledge could possibly include knowing sensitive parts of a person's (or race's) anatomy, as well as knowing what sort of poisons and toxins would cause the most harm (likely DoTs).

I would think a "medic" or doctor is potentially a very dangerous person.

Especially if they punch you in the face with shock paddles.

I think they should rename the class to 'shock docs'.

I prefer the MediTech or the Warden, actually. One sounds a little cooler, the other has connotations of "Guardian" and a person who keeps others in line.

    I was joking. XD

Warden or guardian doesn't sound right given what we've seen of the medic so far.

Thing about that is that anyone can have medical knowledge but not be a specialist in any field of medicine, a case proven by groups known more for their martial arts than their medicine (as well as me or any other doofus who spends way too much time with WebMD).

Although that definition does make sense, it would also impart the in-game stereotype that they're THE healers, pushing out espers or even spellslingers who would want to heal as well as forcing players who want to dps on that particular class into assuming a role they might not want to play.

"Medic," "Doc," and "Main Healer" could very well become popular ironic nicknames among DPS Medics. If Carbine has done their class-balancing right, every class is useful in certain situations, there is no "one" specific class you should have for every situation, and no "that" class which gets constantly looked over.

I don't recall seeing this screenshot of the medic here.
It's from the Aiming Devspeak video.

Nullification field? (And it's an interesting telegraph shape compared to the ones we've seen so far)

The telegraph outline that I'm seeing is still a general cone-shape, it's just blocked rather than a smooth triangle/arc shape that most other games display. Maybe the blocks are significant in some manner.

I have a lot more faith in Carbine devs pulling that off than players giving up the mindset that medics will always heal. There's been more than enough cases from my own experience in MMOs of players not being able to play what they want from a class just because an alternative role is more necessary or more mainstream. However, if Carbine confirms the class to be called "medic" rather than something more role-neutral, I can make a pretty safe bet that no amount of class balance those devs make can shake off that "healing class only" stereotype, a case which can already be proven by its original naming solely from the concept that it's a class that could heal.

Now to rerail the thread (couldn't care less if that's not a word), I'm actually a fan of unreasonably big and bulky weapons and kinda like the shock-pads on steroids. If anything, I'm hoping to see bigger ones, like so massive they require tripods. :D

Using your example of class names, let's take a look at the others:

Warrior - traditional tanking class name
    Stalker - sounds DPS
    Spellslinger - DPS
Esper - toss up here, but sounds DPS-ish I guess
Engineer - They were DPS in Warhammer, so they get a DPS vote
Medic - you have labeled this one healer

If this is how the general Wildstar populace considers the classes, by your naming standards, then we are in for a very boring game.

If your experience has been that people are "not able to play what they want", I suggest finding like-minded people who will let you play what you want. Or buck the system and prove everyone wrong by showing how your uber alternative spec is just as good as the mainstream.

I would be beyond elated if the Medic turns out to be the 3rd tank class. That would be a fantastic way to shake things up.

I would challenge some of these assertions only because I and several other people in the modern MMO market do NOT see warriors as a "tank class" but rather as one that is generally a tank but has perfectly viable and competitive DPS options. Stalkers could very well be stereotyped as a DPS only class, but both spellslinger and esper are pretty unique to most people that'll be coming to WildStar, so they don't run much of a risk of being unfairly pigeonholed or stereotyped. Engineer is also pretty open-ended as well.

Medics, however, very obviously imply a healing-specific role whether you're a longtime MMO player or not. Obviously the smart players will see through this, but many might not. Status quos in thought are not easily overcome. I would like them to have a more role-neutral name and I think it could be done while still falling in line with the class' current design.
