Hi i was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of a free and reasonably easy to use program for image editing to make either sigs or avatars? i have time to kill and would love to kill some by foolin around with some designs.

Yeah, this is the best alternative for Photoshop and it's free. I strongly recommend this.

I use PixLR myself. It's fully web based and it has 3 different modes depending on how indepth you want to get with the editing. Plus it's free

Ok so i threw up a reasonably basic sig and I'm happy with how it turned out given my in-experience with photo editing software, basically cut and moved the psyblade from another section on the wallpaper, added the text and flexed / flared it a bit.

I would personally start with Gimp, and then move your way up. Read a ton of tuts (tutorials) and just sit down and make a ton of sigs, so you can learn all the features. Practice makes perfect.

You could also try the 30 day trail of Photoshop CS6 on the Adobe site

Paint.net - easy to use, and quite awesome once you dig into it. Nice, helpful forums as well. Free :D
