Ok, so we all guessed a robot race would be the "genderless race" Carbine hinted about months ago. Now that we've actually seen a robotic race, Carbine's statement is starting to seem a little vague. It's getting me thinking now. :roflamo:

What we saw was definitely cybernetic. However, it appeared humanoid, albeit it had a robotic face. My point is why exactly would Carbine identify this as a genderless race? Why would it even be considered a race in the first place being a machine? What was the importance of the hint "genderless"?

Obviously, robots do not have a sex. I just assumed the robots would be without humanoid form. I dunno. When I hear "genderless", I usually think "without masculine or feminine features". To me, it seems what we saw was just a "male robot". Am I over-thinking this!?

Of course, we've had yet to see all the options for these machines of war. Will we be able to create one with feminine-like parts?

I find the genderless hint odd now. Maybe they weren't referring to this robot race? Scooter pls!

While that robot in the picture does appear to have masculine features, it is still a robot. I think they wanted to just have a robot with humanoid features, that will be able to wear the armor found in the game. I do hope they a have feminine looking robot, but I can understand why they would not.

Yeah, I would figure the robot/android race would be the soldiers/Cylons of the Dominion, from the looks of things. And all those damn Toasters look the same, built for combat and hard labor. ;)

I think most will agree the cylons are the coolest things in BSG :p

the sylvari in GW2 don't reproduce like humans they are all spawned from the mother tree. but they still have male and female genders and anatomy (sort of). Maybe people are just used to genders. The gamers that say things like I only play my gender or the guy that says I only play females etc..

Maybe you can make it more feminine or masculine with the customization sliders?

I am hoping you can make a short chubby robot.

I think the hint "genderless" is more in that they don't categorise themselves as male or female, they just are as they were built. I do hope that to go along with this they have no male/female character creation step.

When you say non-humanoid, what do you envision?

I think the problem with anything that is too radically non-humanoid is that it presents all sort of itemization issues. You end creating brand new categories of armor and weapons specific to 1/8 of your playable races, and then you have to figure out how to distribute them in a manner that doesn't make the rest of your players feel screwed (say, when a Toshey X51 Power Converter drops for a group with no 'bots in it).

Although, I probably would make a sexy looking fembot if given the choice, so I hope we don't just get a generic "male" feature set for that race. Either way, you raise some interesting questions. Good topic :)

Genderless to me leads to questions about how they procreate.

So what about racial penalties, why only think racial benefits?

Could be fun with a race that switch gender every months or so. The concept could be fun to work with, having to complete visual character creation twice for the race too.
Tara K. Harper had a book ("Lightwing") were one of the main characters are a secretive psychic gender switching type, and the transformation could cause insidents.

What about 3 genders instead of just 2?

3 Genders? Wow interesting. How do you see that? A gender that is 'in between', one that only carries the baby (in case of mammals)?

Yeah I googled 3rd gender, was to early in the morning to be doing such a thing with coffee.

" Biologist and gender theorist Anne Fausto-Sterlin g, in a 1993 article, argued that if people ought to be classified in sexes, at least five sexes, rather than two, would be needed."

I have to say this is the first mmo where I'm excited for the races in both factions, but the Mechari have that magic-imbued terminator feel that is hard for me to resist. Very excited to see their character customization options :)
