It was so nice to see a developer say this:

It has been so long since people used avatar to describe the character instead of toon. I can't stand the word toon for my character. Maybe it is just me, but toon just drives me nuts. It is good to see the developers use the word I was used to since "The Realm" and EQ.

It is odd for him to use the old school term. Wonder if he is just old fashioned or just trying to stay away from the word to distance the graphics from cartoons.

And don't get me wrong, I adore the graphics I have seen so far. Realism bores me.

Any developer who'd use "toon" in an official interview would need to be slapped. Avatar as a term is all class.

I've seen avatar used more than toon. Character is used more often than that. That might have something to do with me verbally slapping anyone who uses "toon", though, at least if it's in chat...

And physically slapping them if they use it in person?

Yeah, Jim Cameron didn't make a movie called "Toon", either. He used the correct term. "Avatar"

    I'm anti-toon. Avatar-apathetic. I go with character.

Why? An avatar is a digital representation of a person so that makes sense for many people. A character implies that the avatar has a unique set of qualities and personality which would make it more appropriate for roleplayers since you aren't actually a bunny-girl wizard in real life... hopefully. However, many people act differently online than they do in real life so its appropriate even for non-roleplayers.

A 'toon'... well, that just has no place in this world. :p

You know, now that I think about it, I realized it's not a particularly widespread term in Europe at all - it's mostly in use by Americans. Whenever I play on NA-designated shards, I notice a significantly higher amount of people referring to characters as "toons" than on EU-designated ones.

One more thing that makes Europe better, I guess. *cackles*

I'll be naming my character Toon. How 'bout THAT apple?
In all seriousness though, I came into MMO's late with WoW, and all I really heard was "toon". I found it irritating. I don't know why... I just feel it's such a dumb word with no place in a game.

The first time I heard "toon" was in City of Heroes where it made sense. I then started seeing it pop up in WoW and now everyone uses it.

I still say "char" or just character. I havnt used the term avatar since Ultima Online and it was carried over from playing the Ultima series where I think a lot of people in UO learned to use the term.

I don't have a problem with the word. It's just a word. Quick easy word at that.

I use Char or Toon. They are faster to type and I don't have to remember how to spell.

I think the first time i ever heard "toon" used to describe a character was when i started playing WoW, before then it was always "character" or "avatar." I dunno if it was the cartoony graphics of WoW that caused players to start calling their characters "toons" but that was where i first heard it. And yeah it kinda pisses me off.

i've heard many dev's talk about the "toons" of their game, and it sounds stupid. It gives me even greater hope that the Wildstar dev's care about their game enough to avoid that ugly discriptor.
