Yeah, you simply ignore the world after all that time. All you will remember will be the capital and the entrance of instances. What's the point of crafting an entire world if you're gonna do this after you hit the level cap?

I don't see many folks that do this unless they are hard-core solo players....players that just don't like to be around others. Heck, even with a flying mount, I go out of my way to find others for socialization.

Don't say nay to mounts...have faith in the devs...geez...they are the pros and from what they've shown us the game will be fantastic.

I like the idea that flight can be challenging...but NOT all the time. Sometimes I just want to fly.

Lots of good ideas in this thread, I wonder if flight would work if they implemented a large amount of these ideas, or would that simply make flight overly cumbersome?

    - level gating
    - zone limitations
    - flight duration limits
    - no activating mounts when engaged in pvp
    - specific takeoff/landing points
    - slow flight speed

    etcetc

    It's beginning to sound hecticccc.

I would like the option for flying mounts. I get that explorers get a jet pack they can use with a day timer on it. And thats pretty special actually. I dont want to take away what makes explorers special , but I would hope jet packs can be used in areas that a flying mount would not work. To reach that ledge in a ruin or cavern.

Having the option to be able to fly around the world somewhat free form would be great. You can add timers to it , gas tanks, etc as long as for half an hour a day I can just zoom around to my hearts content before logging off.
I like having ground mounts as well and if adding timers/gas tanks to flying mounts makes them relevant then great.

I am a collector and I like collecting. Having the option to add a snazzy flying mount would be great. You can let us tinker with it as well. Make it go faster but burn fuel faster or more flying time in exchange for slower speeds. Awesome. That would be great.
As long the world is built to accomodate flying mounts, having some form of flying mount would be great. It would be awesome to have level cap areas only reachable by flying mounts . Where settlers could go, and build a hub and add a taxi so it opens it up to non level cap players.

Im going to be playing a settler and architect. I am definitely going to socialise and be out in the world. The flying mount is just another fun thing to do. Having options is basically the main point of the ramble.

I'm thinking the level gating, fuel (duration limits) & specific take off areas.

Take off points could be on your floating home or a town. Once you land your plane you lose it until you're back in town again to take off at another runway.

    Fuel could last 2 minutes?

And a level cap would obviously be required.

all of them would be terrible.

I would personally only like zone limitations/time or resource limit./no mounting while on combat

slow flight speed dosent make much sense, takeoff/lading can be nice, but it can lead to zerg guilds camping this zones and ruining new players experience.

A zerg guild camping shouldn't be too big a problem wince I don't think there is collision detection between players.

2minutes dosent feel long enough, remember it should be enough to take people to dungeons/raids who might no be close to home.
if anything it should scale with level
how are people supose to take off with 20-30 people killing anyone that gets near the launchpad

Then again thats what some of the people who dislike flight want, they want griefers to annoy people so they can come and save the day.
    i personally dislike unfair PvP

Flying is about as cool as any other form of travel really, sometimes less depending on the scenery.

That said, it's implementation needs to be carefully considered in regards to the rest of the game. If it encourages people to blitz through zones, avoid pvp and essentially rush content then it is a terrible idea to include it. If it has a negative impact on the rest of the game than we could do without.

Fast travel should be limited. Nothing is sadder in the current state of MMO than having a large beautifully designed world that you rush through and never revisit because of teleports/flying/lack of content/etc.

I personally want a meaty world that I have to leg through a lot. I'm ok with taking some time to run through an area. I'd like if it took some time to mobilize a guild to a certain area(Like a world boss).

Flying can be implemented if it simply is done smartly.

I prefer a gliding mechanic more than flight.

If I can't have that, flight should never be out of view from anyone on the ground, and the player in flight should be easily dismounted by enemy faction. I'd also like the flight to be restricted in terms of length used.

yeah bump up the flight time to 3-5 minutes and then i think it will be ideal.

hey if they rolled on a pvp server and dont like being ganked in town then its their problem :p

I feel like it would be important that you can be easily dismounted and unable to avoid PvP by flight.

I know I'm asking too much but it would be nice if the flight level had it's own obstacles and paths while flying. Maybe having to avoid certain environmental dangers would be nice.

Another idea is that the mount could simply be an aerial movement speed buff for a set duration. Like 45 seconds every 5 minutes.

I really like John's idea too, I have always thought there should be some risk items here and there in an MMO and I'd love them to apply what John's talking about to both flying mounts and some other things throughout the game.

i dont mind the ganking, as long as it done by someone i can kill.

getting camped as a lv 20warlock by a lv 70rogue with too much time on their hands its not fun.

the thing about WoW is that flight is one aspect of many that led people away from World PvP.

all you need to have world pvp is to have objectives on open world that people fight over, like the chest on stranglethorn.
and make the reward worth it.

it was LFD that made people stop leaving towns, it was the lack of an goal that made people stop fighting each other, and it was how flight worked that made people able to avoid ganks.

Flight on wow is a massive speed buff that allows flight

A Veichle should handle like such, feel like such and react to things like such.

lets say mounts work like this.

You activate the skill, and select an area, your mount then is delivered to you/droped from the sky, after a short period(replacing casting), you then get in the mount and take off, gaining speed as you acelarate, rather then starting at max speed.

that, and a car should feel like a car, not a Gnome with 350% Move speed buff

Regarding the ganking by higher lvl characters. I don't think thats avoidable. I've had my fair share of getting ganked, especially while doing an escort lol. However I calmly acknowledge I rolled on a pvp server and I log onto my main for some payback.

Carbine have said that they have no plans for world pvp objectives at this time. They will see how spontaneous world pvp works out.

    LFD sucks.

Slow momentum on take off would be a solution in world pvp however I would still prefer that a player uses their aircraft to get to their desired location and cannot use it again until they enter a town. It allows too much... running away from other players in pvp and less exploration of the world on the ground where there will be dynamic events and interaction with players.

I think the justification for slow flight speed was to make sure you can't outspeed a ground mount to keep them relevent.

I assumed from your posts previously in this thread that you were more of a pve server fan so I didn't think about pvp server problems. Especially since you don't seem to realize the lack of world pvp in TBC and wotlk compared to vanilla wow. (Except in Quel Danas, an area with no flying allowed coincidentally.)

Regardless, world pvp will never be fair and rolling a pvp server is saying that you are willing to take the ganking and griefing in order to enjoy that unexpected encounter and adrenaline rush. If 30 guildies want to camp a launch pad I say let em. Either we can form up with soem friends/pugs and clean them out or I'll saddle up my horse/bike/hamster and take the scenic route.

I disagree with gliding, please none of that. Anyways...
I believe that if you have done something from the ground and up, you have done it right, I don't want any fuel, I want to be free and to play the game my way, for those who say I will skip content, well sorry but look, I will buy this game with my money and I will enjoy it however I like, so please, add flying mounts and continue your way of thought.

Still, if this is not possible i guess i mostly like the idea of Rumze

No player controlled free form flying mounts, but you should be able to own a SpaceShip, I'll explain

Throughout the game we've seen Ships drop off the players at cities and quest hubs, and we know you can buy a ticket to travel around via a "taxi" type system to fly (ideally with flight time like old school WoW) from place to place for a fee we assume.
    • At extremely high levels, maybe as part of your house, you should be able to "own" a spaceship that acts like a "free taxi" after you've paid 100s of gold up front for it.
    • Your personal Ship can be upgraded to maybe fly faster from town hub to town hub then the default one. It can be called via auto pilot to any place a normal Ship Taxi would dock, only yours will be faster and cooler.
    • Additionally you can upgrade your Ship for even more investment, like being able to choose new flight paths, ie rather then flying from A to B then from B to C, you can from A right to C because your Ship is cool
    • Highly invested players should be able to carry a small group (5 or less) of friends on their "upgraded flight path" aka their Ship, to fly their friends or group mates around to Cities or Hubs fast. This could lead to player to player trade selling fast transport to a near by place in towns "she is the fastest in the galaxy, only 20silver will get you there".
    • Huge investment in ones ship might might let a player teleport, or beam aboard their ship that is now waiting in orbit, and then via the map pick you can pick any city or quest hub dock to fly to as the quickest way to travel in the game. I think a 10second+ cast time to warp to your "Ship" aka flight point starting in space, while out in the world, faster if you are already at Home. The flight path times would be the shortest available due to always flying in from low orbit near your target landing spot (maybe via warp drive? very cool).
Being able to buy enhanced flight paths via owning a ship keeps flight paths relevant, might add to the economy, increases player investment in their house/ship/warplot/etc while maintaining ground mount value and not exploiting world content. It would add to the effect of the Mentor/Rally system to be able to use your cool Ship to give your group the best flight paths possible, and give you a reason to play your high level character with a low friend. It would be a huge quality of life feature and it would fit amazingly into the lore and the world.
